Puppy Training at PetSmart

Well, it's been a few weeks, and we're doing great!!! In these classes, Chauncey is working on simple commands such as sit, stay, and come when called. They’ll also practice walking on a leash and learning how to focus on you (which can be a big ask when there are so many exciting smells and distractions). Since he's going to be a big boy, I want to make sure that I get all the training I can on how to have him walk alongside me. I'm a walker, and I'm looking forward to long walks together. We're already walking a bit around the neighborhood, but keeping it light since he's still recovering from his broken leg.

One of the things I love most about puppy classes is the socialization. Your puppy gets to be around other puppies in a safe, supervised environment, which helps them learn confidence and good behavior around other dogs. We've got an adorable little teacup, Aussie, Katie, who's in our class. Seriously, it's just the four of us in the class (two owners and two puppies). Talk about one-on-one training.

And let’s be honest — it’s also really reassuring for new puppy owners to realize that everyone else in the room is dealing with the same puppy antics you are.

Training takes patience, consistency, and sometimes a good sense of humor. Puppies don’t get everything right the first time… or the second… or sometimes the tenth. But with positive reinforcement and a little guidance, they really do learn, and so do I.

And before you know it, that tiny whirlwind of energy starts turning into a well-behaved companion who actually listens when you call their name. Well, at least I'm hoping for that. So far so good. Plus, I'm really learning about boundaries.

Well… most of the time. 🐾

Because at the end of the day, puppy training isn’t just about teaching commands.

It’s about building a bond with your dog that will last for years to come. Something I've waited my life time for.
